The latest choice, however, is somewhat unexpected. It is "Cloud Dancer," which Pantone calls a "soft and structural white."

Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, commented that it is "a pivotal neutral tone … enabling all colors to stand out."

Interesting, Cloud Dancer… hold on, just white? Could they be trolling us? Does white qualify as a real color?

How does one describe the hue of a cloud? Milk? Although many view white as a color, all color is at its core a spectrum of light waves. You can find it in a child's crayon box, so in everyday terms the answer is yes.

If Pantone is pulling our leg is trickier to figure out. According to their release, Cloud Dancer mixes well with other colors, avoids sensory overload, declares simplicity, and exudes quiet sophistication.

Feedback online, in contrast, has proven more critical. A number of observers have declared Pantone of being completely "out of touch." Trend analyst Mandy Lee described it as "underwhelming." Others have likened it to coded promotion of problematic concepts seen in other media.

Right, hopefully they're happily ignorant that this isn't the best moment to be overly emphasizing whiteness... So, how can a regular person who doesn't follow a fashion show apply this trend in everyday routine? I recently coated my ceiling in white paint, does that count?
