A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's records.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. Over 80 suspects were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations broke out when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.

The International human rights organization said it was "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

The area of favelas close to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the central command of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.

Local authorities stated no less than 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
