At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's records.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. Over 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations broke out when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.
The International human rights organization said it was "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
