A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews entered the house in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and another man who ran away subsequent to the explosion was located soon after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area displayed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the property was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had secured themselves into the home. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the siblings triggered the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He believed the blast had happened on a story above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to local news, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
