Hamilton Island, a Popular Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
