A familiar auction figure is a well-known presence at the yearly event.

A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the calendar year.

The top bid for the 243kg fish was submitted by the operator of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets across the country and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna heralds a prosperous start," commented the business owner, a regular bidder at the yearly new year's auction.

Known as the Tuna King, this businessman is renowned for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the winner admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the amount," adding, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This most recent purchase surpasses his previous historic purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to break his own record once again.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different food company, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries nationwide.

The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The extremely valuable tuna was quickly processed for customers at the bidder's sushi establishments soon after the auction was finished.

"I sense like I've commenced the year in a good way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year begins," said one elated patron.
