Over a fortnight following the shocking loss of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer Michele Reiner, the entertainment community continue to honor the pair.
‘Life is Pain Without You’: Cary Elwes Pays Tribute to His Director
Posting on Instagram, actor Cary Elwes, who starred in Reiner's beloved 1987 film *The Princess Bride*, stated he only now felt prepared to share openly about his deep grief.
"Enough time has gone by that I can now put my grief into words," wrote Elwes, adding that his initial encounter with Reiner left him smitten. "When we commenced spending more time together I realized this was someone I wanted in my life."
The actor shared behind-the-scenes footage from the movie, adding that he could not remember "one day without joy".
"This story is about devotion, fidelity and selflessness. Values that Rob cherished deeply. Which is among the many reasons he was the ideal person to helm it," Elwes continued.
He additionally honored Michele Reiner, stating: "To say that they were a incredible duo would be an understatement. My heart still hurts every time I remember you." He ended with a phrase from *The Princess Bride*: "Indeed, death cannot stop true love but life is pain without you."
Martin Scorsese Recalls a Colleague and Comrade
In a different piece, acclaimed director Martin Scorsese also honored Reiner, whom he initially encountered in the 1970s.
"From the start, I loved being with Rob. We had a natural affinity for each other. He was very funny and sometimes acutely humorous, but he was never the kind of guy who would command the room," Scorsese said.
Scorsese pointed out Reiner's supporting role in his 2013 film *The Wolf of Wall Street*, embodying the father of the lead role.
"He could improvise with the best. He was a master at comedy, he worked wonderfully with the cast, and he understood the personal struggle of his character," Scorsese wrote.
Court Proceedings: Autopsy Reports Withheld
This week, a Los Angeles judge ruled to bar the release of the Reiners' autopsy reports, at the request from the Los Angeles Police Department.
A judicial mandate put a restriction on the files to prohibit the public release of "related notes, notes, reports or photos" associated with the active case.
The Medical Examiner's office had already determined their deaths were the consequence of foul play, with a public database citing the cause as "injuries from a sharp object".
Response and Criticism
In the wake of the tragedy, public individuals expressed varying responses.
Ex-President Donald Trump wrote on the matter, making provocative claims that were widely condemned by several public figures.
Podcaster Joe Rogan added his perspective to the detractors recently. Speaking on his program, Rogan described the comments as "disturbing" and suggested they revealed a concerning lack of empathy.
Rogan concluded by suggesting that an associate could have intervened when the decision to weigh in on the death was made.
